The US dollar reigns on Zanzibar. US dollar banknotes are generally rapidly changed. Euros and Pound Sterling are less useful. You’ll need some Tanzanian shillings to pay in local shops, taxis, drinks…
Remarks:
- Don't change money on the streets. There is no black market of any note. Ignore offers on the street - it's probably a set-up.
- Credit cards can be used to pay bills, but they are not widely accepted.
- Keep hold of your changing receipts so that you can change your shillings back to hard currency when you leave.
- Zanzibar can be surprisingly expensive!
YES! Is it important to bargain! Where prices are marked, they’re generally fixed. Sometimes, especially souvenirs, the vendor asks you ten times the price which he is prepared to accept. The bluffing on both sides is part of the game.
When leaving Zanzibar, you will need to pay a departure tax which is not included in your tickets!
- International flight tax $ 30. connecting out of Tanzania!
- Domestic Flight without international connection: 5 p.p.
- Harbour tax $5 p.p.
Cash only!
